Are you relieved that it's a new year?
Does it come with thoughts of new intentions, goals?
The Road Ahead
Have you noticed the typical January bump-up of ads related to weight loss and fitness?
It brings to mind the grocery store cashier who gets a pretty good idea of how long those resolutions last by sales of the super-food veggie kale (for many, an acquired taste).
He said that after a surge, sales usually fall off a cliff by the end of the month.
While big intentions for change can be admirable, sometimes they can also get overwhelming.
And overwhelming can often default into swapping out potato chips for kale.
9 Simple Words: How Not to Have a New Year
Something that helps me stay on track is the consistent gentle reminder that the things I want to change won't if I:
These words are simple, yet profound. If you let them really sink in, this year can be remarkable for you.
A Nature Example
Because so much of what was in the world has been upended, it brings a greater opportunity to create the changes you want to have in your life.
Think of the ground right now. If you're in the northern hemisphere, it's sort of frozen. Can't do much with that.
I used to live in a big city. Now I live in the country. In the spring, I get a big kick out of the occasional parade of humongous green and yellow John Deere farm equipment that rumbles down the two lane highway in front of where I live as they lumber through the village into the nearby fields.
To plow them up.
Make them ready for planting.
Which makes them ready for growth.
The changes we've been through and are going through now have done the hard work of turning over the ground, a metaphor for consciousness.
Making the world ready.
Making you ready.
For something new.
